Now that Microsoft has acquired Skype, the Windows operating system delivers updates to the program via Automatic Updates. While new releases add valuable improvements to the conferencing software, application upgrades can also introduce bugs that cause Skype to crash or certain features and functions to stop working. If you're experiencing problems since upgrading the application, revert to a previous version of Skype until Microsoft releases a new update. You can download past releases of the software from OldVersion.com or any of a number of websites that archive and make available for download older versions of popular applications.

Open the notification area in the task bar and then right-click the Skype icon. Select 'Quit' from the context menu to exit Skype.

Press 'Windows-C' to view the Charms bar. Click 'Settings,' then 'Control Panel.' Select 'Uninstall a Program' under Programs.

Right-click 'Skype' and then select 'Uninstall' from the context menu. Follow the onscreen prompts to remove the application.

Navigate to OldVersion.com, OldApps or Old-versions.org (links in Resources) in a Web browser. Search for Skype.
5.
Select 'Skype' from the results, select a previous version to download, and then click 'Download Now.'
6.
Launch the EXE file when the download completes and then follow the onscreen prompt to install the application.

Not a replacement for your phone: Although you can call landlines and cell phones, and even purchase your own phone number through Skype, this application is not a replacement for having a phone. Skype does not offer local emergency 911 services, nor does it allow the recipients of your text messages to reply to them, unless you have a verified cell phone number with Skype.
Bottom Line
A high-quality application, Skype for Mac can replace your more expensive methods of communication. Easy to navigate and highly intuitive, it's an excellent option if you want to lower your phone bills. We recommend it above other communication systems, including FaceTime. Keep in mind, though, that Skype is not an alternative to owning a phone.
