Producer’s cut For years the only way you could watch the producers cut was via poorly made VHS/DVD versions of the film. Thankfully in 2014, Anchor Bay and Shout Factory put together the Limited Edition Halloween Complete Collection which included an all new remastered version of the Producers Cut on Blu-Ray and more recently Lionsgate has released a standalone version as well.

Halloween 6 Producer's Cut (spoilers)

spoiler

If you're even the most mildly interested Halloween fan, at least a few times over the years, you probably remember hearing about the Producer's Cut to Halloween 6. As a fan of the series since damn near birth it feels like, I definitely knew of its existence and the nefarious-like sleuthing it took to receive a copy of this once forbidden movie.

I was about ten when I came across a Halloween message board in the early 00s and you'd find fans discussing this lost movie - how it was just so much better than the original. But it was difficult finding a print of the Producer's Cut. Oh sure, there were poor quality videos uploaded to some Halloween fan page hosted on Angelfire you could watch to get a general idea of the movie - but in terms of having an actual film? Good luck.

I actually somehow talked my mom into letting me buy a copy of the deleted scenes once. I can't remember where I purchased my copy, but it came in the mail in a CD case very similar to the Halloween 6 soundtrack CD case (which I owned as well) - and, true to its words, it was the deleted scenes. In fact, that's all it was. No movie. Just a collection of deleted scenes poorly recorded, which was typically the only footage that existed back then. Still, for a budding Halloween fan, one who absolutely loved Halloween 6 (I know, what an odd one of the series to love), this was like the Holy Grail of Halloween memorabilia. And it was mine!

Of course, today, we've got the blu ray release of Halloween 6's Producer's Cut. It's seamless and pretty darn good for footage that apparently didn't exist (or so I remember being told back then) beyond test screenings from the 90s.

You can purchase it now for like $7.00 at Walmart. Boy how the chase has changed.

Of course, due to its wide release now, I'm guessing most Halloween fans have seen it. And we've been able to really address the point that was made so many times over when the P-Cut was nothing more than just a lost film you had to scourer the internet to find - whether it was really better than the theatrical release.

Fans from that era would absolutely have you believe it's better. It's better edited. It's not nearly as convoluted. It's got a better soundtrack - and, maybe most of all, more scenes with Donald Pleasence as Dr. Loomis.

But is it a better movie?

I don't think so. In fact, I don't like the Producer's Cut. Which might put me in the minority (maybe not so much the minority since not many people like either adaption, either way - but I know many feel it's a better version of Halloween 6). I think it's silly. I think it's even more ridiculously convoluted than the original theatrical cut and I don't even care for the way the Halloween theme is awkwardly used throughout much of the movie.

In my view, the P-Cut is absolutely a worse film than Halloween 6. It's not as scary. Michael isn't nearly as terrifying and the continued expansion of the cult story-line is just positively stupid.

That's not to say all of it is worse than the theatrical cut. I did like Dr. Loomis' opening monologue. I absolutely loved the additional scenes he was in, which is truly missing from the theatrical cut.

But some of changes (well, not really changes, since this was the original movie before the changes were made for the T-Cut) just didn't sit well with me.

Michael not killing Jamie in the barn - instead just leaving her there after stabbing her. Okay. Maybe he thinks she'll just bleed out and die, but I never liked the fact he went back to the truck, saw that the baby wasn't in there, and just took off. In my mind, Michael would have absolutely returned to Jamie lying in the barn and killed her in a fit of anger. That's how I'd imagine him - he wanted that baby but just shrugs and walks off after finding it's not in the truck? Okay.

I actually liked Jamie's death in the T-Cut. It was brutal. It was the third death of the movie and absolutely set the tone for how goddamn angry Michael was in this movie. Pissed off Michael, and I may be in the minority here, is my favorite kind of Michael.

And to be honest, had they been able to get Danielle Harris, this scene would've been far more effective with her history in Halloween 4 & 5 - way more effective due to the sentimental reasons, than her being unceremoniously shot while lying in a hospital bed.

But even with J. C. Brandy, it works better in the T-Cut.

That does open one plot hole - why Loomis was even at the hospital when he runs into Tommy. Whatever. I'll live with that plot hole because this whole movie, even the P-Cut, is riddled with plot holes!

The Man in Black's taunting of Danny at the breakfast scene just seems needless. I liked how surprising it was for Danny to pull the knife on his own when John starts berating Kara. Not a major issue - but, again, the T-Cut wins here. Though, to be fair, the extra dialogue with Tim and Danny is nice and I wish they would've left that in.

But that really hammers home my feelings on the P-Cut and the T-Cut. I definitely feel the dialogue, the additional scenes with, say, Debra and Dr. Loomis or even Dr. Loomis and Dr. Wynn, are missing in the T-Cut and it was nice to see 'em added. But really, that's the only aspect of the P-Cut I feel is better than what was actually released.

Unpopular as it may be - this movie is ruined by being bogged down in Thorn. I feel Miramax was right in reshooting to reference Thorn as little as possible. Yes, it leaves a lot of questions, maybe too many questions, but to be honest, the answers we got to those questions were even more ridiculous to the open-ended questions, anyway - like, uh, Michael raping Jamie and impregnating her.

Finally, there's the ending. The P-Cut's ending has no climax. There's a ceremony. Kara begs for her life. Danny is being groomed to be the new Michael - and then Tommy steps up, wearing ritual clothing, and puts a knife to Dr. Wynn's neck. Wynn instantly gives in, demands they let her go, and then Michael apparently wakes up and begins his chase. Everything ends when Tommy puts down stones around Michael, cuts his hand and incorrectly mispronounces 'Samhain' - which stops Michael dead in his tracks. Who knew, after all these years, it was so easy to kill the bogeyman?

It's a stupid, silly ending. Not that the T-Cut is all that better - but it's more action paced and has some really interesting cinematic scenes. Plus, again, I like Angry Michael. None of this bs where Michael can be stopped by a few fucking rocks.

Granted, Tommy beating Michael's head into a slimy green pulp isn't very good...but it's better than this. I will give the P-Cut credit, though, for its final scene with Michael wearing the Man in Black's clothes, looking back at the camera. It was very well done.

It doesn't make the ending any better, however.

So, count me out on the P-Cut. It's not a good movie and worse, it's a boring movie. Halloween 6 wasn't very good, and certainly confusing, but it was enjoyable due to its crazy kills (which were toned down in the original P-Cut) and absolutely bat-shit insane ending. That, in my mind, makes it more enjoyable because, even as a fan, I can say with confidence that neither are particularly good movies.

If I could, I'd take the additional dialogue from the P-Cut and add it into the T-Cut - the longer scenes, the more camera time for Dr. Loomis - and leave out all the cult mumbo jumbo because it's just not effective.

My feeling is that the P-Cut was such a forbidden fruit for so long that fans built it up in their heads as this great version of what turned out to be an overall disappointing entry into the Halloween Universe. Because of how difficult it was to get through the backchannels of the internet, it really did become a legend of sorts.

And maybe that warps fans' thoughts on it. There are people who'll defend it passionately as a decent movie and I just can't get into that mindset. I think it's bad and would have been way more disappointed with the movie had the P-Cut been released instead of the T-Cut. Mostly because the movie would've bored me - which is damning in and of itself but even more so when a bad movie bores you.

So, basically, to sum it up: I never got the H6 P-Cut hype. If you do, if you love it, that's great and you finally got it on blu ray! I'm glad I own it. And I'll watch it sometimes. But if I'm watching Halloween 6, I'll default to the T-Cut. Warts and all.
