English Kings: The House of York & the Wars of the Roses

When studying the English kings of the House of York, you have to understand that at that time some barons or vassals were more powerful and richer than the king himself. One of the 'super barons' was Warwick. Warwick, whose name was Richard Neville was the 16th Earl of Warwick. Warwick was so wealthy and influential, that he could raise his own private army. Warwick also had powerful friends outside of England's borders. The only thing Warwick lacked was a direct bloodline to claim the throne. Yet Warwick was so powerful during the Wars of the Roses that his nickname was 'Kingmaker,' because whomever he backed had the better chance of becoming king.

During the Wars of the Roses, Warwick fought on the side of York. Richard Duke of York, died at the Battle of Wakefield in 1460, so Edward, his son, continued the Yorkist claim to the throne. All the while the 'Kingmaker' continued to fight on the side of the House of York. After his victory at Mortimer's Cross in 1461, Edward, Earl of March, the son of Richard from the House of York was proclaimed King Edward IV. There was no question that Warwick's support helped Edward's cause.

In 1464, the alliance between Warwick and King Edward IV soured. Edward secretly married Elizabeth Woodville for love, while Warwick had planned a marriage between Edward and the royal House of France. The 'Kingmaker' became furious and felt humiliated when he discovered the marriage of the king. Warwick switched sides, fighting instead for Lancaster, and allying himself with his one-time enemy, Margaret of Anjou, Henry VI's wife. During this time Henry VI suffered from mental illness, so queen Margaret led the Lancastrian armies.

In 1470, shortly after the Lancastrian victory against York at the Battle of Edgecoat Moor, Henry VI was restored as king. However at the Battle of Losecoat Field, Edward won a victory and took the crown from Henry VI. Margaret of Anjou and Warwick were forced to flee to France for safety.

Warwick had no sons, but he married his daughters to important people. Warwick's oldest daughter, Isabel, was married to King Edward's brother, George Duke of Clarence. His daughter Anne was married to Edward, the Prince of Wales, whose father and mother were Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou. Richard Neville, the Earl of Warwick, was killed at the Battle of Barnet in 1471. Later that year the Lancastrians were defeated at Tewkesbury. Edward, Prince of Wales, was killed in battle and his father, Henry VI, was captured and later murdered. Anne, Warwick's daughter, was now a widow, in 1472 she married Richard, King Edward's younger brother.

King Edward IV died unexpectedly in 1483 at a very young age. He and his queen, Elizabeth Woodville had three children: Edward, Richard, and Elizabeth. Richard, Edward's brother, seized the throne in 1483. At first he was the protector of his nephews, who really had a better claim to the throne than he. In fact, after his father's death, the older boy, Edward, became Edward V, but that didn't stop Richard. Richard also had his brother George murdered. The young princes were kept in the Tower of London under King Richard's watchful eye. In 1483 they both vanished, never to be seen again. It has to be assumed that the 'Princes in the Tower' as they are sometimes called, were murdered either by Richard's direct command or by someone acting alone on behalf of Richard's interests.

War

The House of Lancaster may have been down, but they were not out. Henry Tudor, a member of one of the branches of the House of Lancaster from his mother's side, raised an army in France and invaded England to claim the throne for himself. The showdown took place at the Battle of Bosworth Field. Here, the forces of Henry Tudor defeated the forces of King Richard III. Richard III was killed on the battlefield, ending the Plantagenet Dynasty. Henry Tudor became Henry VII; to heal the bad feelings between Lancaster and York, he married Elizabeth of York, the daughter of King Edward IV. The Tudor Dynasty was the first of the Modern Age, and included Henry Tudor's son, Henry VIII, and his grandchildren Edward VI, Mary, and Elizabeth I.
